SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State right-hander Randi Rupp collected her third win against University of South Alabama softball this weekend, as the Bobcats completed a Sun Belt Conference sweep of the Jaguars with a 1-0 win in game three on Sunday.
Rupp (22-9) entered the game in the second inning in relief of starter Quincy Charleston with the bases loaded and no outs and struck out three Jaguar batters. Rupp struck out seven on the day against one walk and allowed only one hit in six shutout relief innings.
The last time USA (26-16, 14-6 SBC) was swept in a three-game league set was May 6-7, 2012, when No. 8 Louisiana-Lafayette took all three at Lamson Park. Coincidentally, that was also the last time South Alabama had been dealt back-to-back shutout losses until this weekend, as Rupp pitched the Bobcats past the Jags twice on Saturday in 3-1 and 3-0 victories.
Free bases on walks and hit by pitches led to USA's demise in both Saturday games, and Sunday was no different. Kendall Wiley was hit in the arm by Devin Brown's pitch to lead off and moved to second on Bianca Prado's sacrifice bunt before providing the winning margin on Kimberlin Naivar's double to right field.
Naivar and Kelli Baker recorded each of Texas State's two hits. Amanda Minahan, Haleigh Lowe, Haleigh Lane and Alex Breeden recorded a hit apiece for USA. Brown suffered her second loss of the weekend, falling to 15-10 after giving up one run (earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and walk.
USA's best opportunity began with singles from Lowe and Lane bookending Pilkington's walk in the second frame, but Rupp replaced Charleston and immediately shut the door.
Rupp struck out 27 Jaguar batters in 20 innings and held South Alabama to a .147 batting average this weekend.
South Alabama travels to Starkville on Tuesday to take on Mississippi State in a non-conference clash at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
