STRONG PITCHING PERFORMANCE NOT ENOUGH FOR SOFTBALL ON WEDNESDAY

BATON ROUGE, La. – Despite another double-digit strikeout performance from sophomore right-hander Devin Brown, South Alabama softball could not overcome No. 5 LSU on Wednesday in a 5-0 loss at Tiger Park.

LSU (9-2) recorded only one more hit than South Alabama (6-4), but the Tigers paired theirs together in the third and fourth innings for the win, moving to 8-2 all-time versus the Jaguars. South Alabama placed at least one runner on base in each inning of the contest, but LSU pitcher Allie Walljasper proved difficult to double up.

After Emily Griggs drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third inning, Bianka Bell doubled down the left field line to score the runner for LSU's first swipe, and Kellsi Kloss followed with a single back up the middle to double the host lead to 2-0.

Sahvannah Jaquish singled to right center an inning later to score Sandra Simmons, who reached on a ground-rule double, and Constance Quinn, who singled, to put the Tigers up, 4-0. Jaquish then scored on a Jaguar fielding error for LSU's fifth run.

Simmons was 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead LSU. Jaquish finished with two RBI and a run scored on one hit. Kloss scored a run on one hit and drew a pair of walks. Six total Tigers recorded at least one hit on the night.

Walljasper evened her record to 2-2 with the win after striking out eight to two walks and scattering six Jaguar hits in the complete-game shutout.

Brown fell to 3-3 with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with a season-high-tying 11 strikeouts and six walks. The 11 strikeouts were the most dealt to LSU this season.

Kaleigh Todd and Haleigh Lane each went 2-for-3 on Wednesday, with the former also drawing a walk and reaching on an LSU error.

South Alabama returns to action this weekend when it hosts the 2016 South Alabama Invitational at Jaguar Field. USA faces Bowling Green at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, to open the event.
