MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team swept Georgia Southern (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday in a Sun Belt Conference match at Jag Gym.
USA (12-8, 3-4 SBC) extended its winning streak to three games with the win, which marked its third consecutive sweep of a SBC opponent following previous straight-set wins over Georgia State and Troy.
Mechell Daniel led the Jaguar attack with a game-high 11 kills and .474 hitting percentage along with four digs. Nikki Gittens finished with 10 kills, four digs and two block assists, and Iva Durdanovic added eight kills, one assist, eight digs and two block assists. Kellyn Reeves recorded a game-high 19 assists, while Ashlyn Roberts finished with one kill, 17 assists and eight digs. Arissa Chappell posted a season-high 13 digs along with five assists and one service ace.
The Jaguars opened the match with a 25-16 win in set one. USA built a five-point lead midway through the set, 11-6, after scoring four straight points on a pair of kills by Daniel, a service ace from Roberts and an Eagle error. A kill by Gittens gave the Jags set point at 24-15. Following a kill by Georgia Southern's Lauren Reichard, Gittens clinched the set with a kill on an assist from Reeves.
South Alabama took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win in set two. The Jaguars held a one-point lead, 16-15, midway through the tightly-contested set before reeling off four consecutive points, highlighted by kills from Daniel and Kristina Alabstro, for a 20-15 advantage. A kill by Gittens gave the Jaguars set point at 24-20, and a kill from Kelley Hartman, who finished with six total in the match, clinched the set.
USA sealed the win with a 25-18 victory in set three. The Jaguars held a three-point lead, 16-13, midway through the set. A pair of kills by Hartman and service ace from Chappell pushed the USA lead to 19-13. The Jags earned match point, 24-17, on a kill by Sarah Richardson before an Eagle error ended the set and match.
"It was a really good weekend. I am proud of our girls; they played hard and executed," USA head coach Amy Hendrichovsky said. "We executed really well both matches – it was a good weekend. We have some things we have been focusing on in practice, and the team has been following the game plan. We really believe in this team, and I think once they believe in themselves then they play really well."
South Alabama will return to action Fri., Oct. 21, when it faces Arkansas State at 6 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark.
