JAG VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN STRAIGHT SETS AT ASU

JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of South Alabama volleyball team fell to Arkansas State in straight sets (21-25, 20-25, 14-25) in a Sun Belt Conference match Friday at the Convocation Center.

Kellyn Reeves recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 assists and 10 digs for USA (12-9, 3-5 SBC). Kristina Alabastro finished with a team-high eight kills and .500 hitting percentage along with three digs and two block assists. Ashlyn Roberts added 14 assists and five digs, and Kelley Hartman finished with six kills, two digs and two blocks.

Carlisa May finished with a game-high 13 kills to lead the Arkansas State (16-7, 8-1 SBC) attack, while Kelsey Reis added 11 kills. Kenzie Fields recorded three kills, one assist, 16 digs and four service aces.

The Red Wolves opened the match with a 25-21 win in set one. ASU held a 9-4 lead before USA reeled off four straight points on kills by Nikki Gittens and Kelley Hartman and a pair of Arkansas State errors. Trailing 11-8, the Jaguars scored five consecutive points, highlighted by two kills by Alabastro and one kill by Mechell Daniel, to take a 13-11 lead. The Red Wolves responded by scoring nine of the next 10 points for a 20-14 advantage before later closing out the set 25-21.

ASU took set two 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. South Alabama held a 15-14 lead midway through the set, but the Red Wolves scored five straight points for a 19-15 advantage. Arkansas State held set point at 24-20, and clinched the set on a Jaguar service error.

ASU secured the sweep with a 25-14 win in set three to snap the Jaguars' three-game winning streak. USA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the set on a kill by Daniel and three ASU attack errors. The Jags held a 12-11 lead midway through the set. Arkansas State then scored nine straight points to take a 20-12 lead. A kill by Jessica Uke gave the Red Wolves match point, and a kill by Shelby Holmes closed the set and match.

USA will return to action Saturday when it squares off with Little Rock at 6:30 p.m. in a SBC contest at Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Ark.
