MONROE, La. -- Louisiana-Monroe had all five starters reach double-digit points and used a 16-2 run late in the first half to pull away from the University of South Alabama men's basketball team and win 100-68 Saturday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Warhawks stay undefeated at home and go to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Jaguars fall to 7-12 and 2-6.
"You really have to give ULM a lot of credit," USA head coach
Matthew Graves said. "Coach (
Keith)
Richard did an outstanding job with their ball movement -- it was really impressive the way they moved the ball and made the extra pass -- and they were able to get inside our defense and score at will. Even when their main guys weren't scoring in the first half, other guys stepped up and made big plays for them.
"In the second half, the floodgates came undone and we didn't respond very well. A lot of it was frustration from Thursday night and spilled over into today. We've got to be more mature and be able to handle some adversity."
ULM's
Justin Roberson led all scorers with 23 points on 9 for 12 shooting, and shared game-high honors with
Nick Coppola with seven assists.
DeMondre Harvey went 10 for 11 from the free-throw line for 20 points, and Majok Deng scored 15 of his 17 points after halftime.
Jamaal Samuel recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Junior
Ken Williams (Houston, Texas) paced the Jags with 14 points and three assists. Junior
Georgi Boyanov (Lovech, Bulgaria) had 13 points and eight boards.
The Warhawks took control with 5:30 left in the first half when a jumper from Samuel gave them a 27-21 lead. Samuel's basket was the first of four straight made field goals and ULM made six of seven from the floor to finish up its 16-2 burst.
A 17-7 run in the second half pushed the margin up to 19 with 12:35 left to play, and took a 30-point lead with just over two minutes remaining.
"They have a lot of different options and they were able to move the ball and make the extra pass," Graves said. "They had five guys that scored in double-figures, so they have a lot of weapons. They have a very old, mature team that's been through the battles; they won a lot of games last year. They're undefeated at home and there's a reason: they're an outstanding team."
