UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/6

Photo Gallery

Date: 8/6
Time: 7:15-9:30 a.m.
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Player of the Day: Marvin Shinn, Sr., WR, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Shinn: "I thought Marvin really cleaned some things with his techniques and fundamentals at the 'Z' receiver.  He made some big plays, which we are expecting out of him this year.  I saw him attack each snap with a lot of aggression and want to make that play.  Marvin has a lot of big-play potential, which we saw today."

Defensive Player of the Day: Kalen Jackson, Jr., ILB, Magee, Miss.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Jackson: "Kalen is brand new to the system after coming in from UAB.  We started him out at safety but moved him down into the box and he has been a pleasant surprise.  He has made minimal, if any, mistakes, he can run and is physical; Kalen is just what we need in that area.  He adds another piece to the puzzle, I've been really pleased with his performance."

Play of the Day: Cody Clements connected with Marvin Shinn for a 40-yard touchdown on the second snap of the second 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills period.

Team period highlights: USA did not have a team period, but ran just under 90 plays in 30 minutes as part of the two 7-on-7 segments of practice.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Special teams periods focused on punt and kickoff coverage.
-With multiple 7-on-7 skeleton drills, the Jag offense used a nearly 15-minute period midway through the morning to work on the run game.
-During individual work the defense had 10-minute periods on takeaways, blitzes and learning coverages.
-Each of the three quarterbacks to take snaps during the second 7-on-7 period — Clements, Dallas Davis and Matt Floyd — threw at least one touchdown pass; the latter was 10-of-12 overall.
-Eight Jaguar receivers made more than one catch during the final period of 7-on-7 drills, with Shinn, Chris Lewis and Sam Harris recording three apiece.
-Shinn had a pair of scores — Floyd found him from 30 yards out on the next-to-last play — while both of Kevin Kutchera's receptions resulted in touchdowns.
-Andrew Philon and Antonio London were credited with passes defensed.
-At the end of the day, Aleem Sunanon converted a 42-yard field goal, forcing the coaching staff to complete a set of push-ups.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On Thursday morning's practice: "I thought it was good.  We practiced late last night and got off the field around 9, then got up early this morning, so I thought they would have dead legs but we made it through the practice pretty well.  I was proud of how they pushed themselves."
-On the difficulty of practicing in the morning after a night workout: "We have to be smart as coaches in how we practice early.  I think once you get past that five-day mark you can push them a little bit more, but I thought the coaches did a good job of pushing and then backing off all the way through practice.  If you do that, it gives them a chance to get their legs and bodies in shape."
-On practicing for the first time this camp in shoulder pads: "There is no doubt that the defensive guys like to have their shoulder pads on and hit somebody, which is a good thing.  It's a physical game, you can't play unless you are physical, and you've got to have shoulder pads and helmets on to do that."
-On the performance of USA's quarterbacks through three days of practice: "Cody threw the ball much better today, and Dallas Davis made some great throws including a couple of long balls right on the money in 7-on-7.  I don't have any complaints about any of them, they are all doing well; it's just that after this week we are going to have to start narrowing things down."

Up next: USA's next practice will start at 7:15 a.m. Friday at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
