DENTON, Texas
– After gaining an early advantage after doubles, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team fell 4-2 at North Texas Sunday morning at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

The Jaguars end the regular season with an 18-2 record and will move on to the Sun Belt Conference Championships later this week in New Orleans, with the opponent and date to be announced. The Mean Green go to 8-13 on the year.

"Today was a tough loss," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "Sometimes a team has your number and today it felt like North Texas had ours. They came out swinging and unfortunately we could not absorb their blows early in singles."

The Jags grabbed a 1-0 lead after senior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Anastasiya Shestakova and Alexis Thoma 7-5 on the No. 2 court. Senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) got the first win, 6-2 at No. 1 before North Texas got a 6-2 victory at No. 3.

North Texas took the next three singles matches in straight sets to go up 3-1. Shestakova tied the match at 1-1 after topping sophomore Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) 6-2, 6-4 on the No. 2 court, then Agustina Valenzuela downed Meszarosova 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2. Kseniya Bardabush made it three in a row for NT at No. 1 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Valkova.

A 6-2, 6-4 victory from sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) briefly stemmed the tide, but Franziska Sprinkmeyer rallied from a first-set loss to end Martin's 12-match win streak and clinch the match for North Texas on the No. 6 court, 6-7 (9-11), 6-0, 6-4.

"It's a disappointing end to a great regular season, but ultimately this upcoming weekend is what we have prepared for the past 12 months," said Keyser. "I'm looking forward to a very exciting conference tournament."
