MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama's women's golf team will open play at the 22nd Annual John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate, March 29-31 at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Atlanta, Ga.
The USA lineup will include Elisa Axelsen, Carianne Wright, Ingrid Hagen, Kaeli Jones and Caroline Beebe. The three-day, 54-hole event will feature four other Sun Belt Conference teams: Appalachian State, Louisiana-Monroe, Troy and Georgia State. Eagle's Landing is a par-72, 6,109-yard course and 18 holes will be played each day.
"We have over half of the conference here in this tournament. That's a nice thing going into the conference tournament; seeing those teams and competing against them," USA head coach TJ Jackson said. "It's a good field and it will be a good challenge for us. Going into a tournament, we can only control what we can control. We'll go out there with a mindset and play the golf course, and let the numbers speak for themselves."
The Jaguars are coming off of two top-three finishes at the Lady Eagle Invitational and the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational.
"We've been talking all along that we want all the players to contribute at some point during the season. We haven't had them do it all in the same round and we finally accomplished that even though we know we can improve on that," Jackson said. "To get two rounds out of three in the direction we want to go is a big confidence booster. We had an opportunity to come back from that second round and I give them a lot of credit. It shows their character and toughness coming back and playing well in that final round. We left on a high note which will help with our confidence going into our next tournament in Georgia State."
Campbell, who finished in the top eight in the NCAA Regional and 20th at the NCAA Championship, won the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate last year. Georgia State's Maria Palacios (72-70-72) was the individual medalist.
Other teams competing in the tournament will be Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Middle Tennessee, Morehead State, Old Dominion, Seattle, Stetson and Western Kentucky.
"Momentum and discipline of the mental game the entire 18-hole round is important and I think we have been doing a really good job of that as of late. We're improving as we go on in the mental game," Jackson commented. "Golf is a difficult game in that every day is a new day. You pick up one day and you don't have the same feel as you did the day before. Being able to work through those days, if they happen like that, and be able to post a score with a different field is what good players do."
