Date: 3/20
Time: 3-5 p.m.
Place: Campus practice fields
Practice attire: Shells (Helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: Dami Ayoola, So., RB, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Ayoola: "He did a really good job on our first day in pads where we did some live inside work on our run game and some live team work. Dami did a good job catching the ball out of the backfield and making something happen, and then his vision inside the tackles was very impressive."
Defensive Player of the Day: Quinton Dent, Jr., CB, Haines City, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Dent: "He's learning to play on the edge and with some real intensity. He didn't have the greatest of first two days, but he battled back and had a pretty good day today. I think he gained some confidence, it's good to see Quinton come out here and play that way."
Play of the Day: On the second snap of the second team period of the workout, Hunter Vaughn hit Kyle Sappington over his outside shoulder for a gain of more than 20 yards.
Team period highlights: During the first of two team periods, USA had a seven-minute segment in which the offense faced blitzes. The second period lasted 22 minutes, with the offense attempting to move the ball facing normal downs and distances while starting from its own 30-yard line.
Miscellaneous Notes-Today marked the second time in three sessions that Vincent has recognized Ayoola following practice. The transfer from Arizona Western C.C. — who joined the program prior to the start of the spring semester — ran for 404 yards last season.
-The Jaguar defense went through a tackle circuit during individual drills the first half of practice.
-The first special teams period of the day focused on punt returns, with the second to close out the session working on punt blocks.
-As part of a Coaches Clinic held throughout the day, six individuals from the high school, junior college and collegiate levels — including first-year Jaguar assistant Tyler Siskey — addressed the group of attendees.
-After donning shoulder pads for the first time this spring, the Jags will wear full pads at Saturday's practice.
Head coach Joey Jones-On the day's practice: "I thought the defense definitely came out with a lot of enthusiasm and were getting after it, and the offense kind of sputtered around a little bit; but that's to be expected. The effort was still good, we're just trying to build the character of these young men one day at a time."
-On his goals for the spring season: "We're going to meet as a staff every Monday and evaluate personnel. My offensive and defensive coordinators do it every day, but every Monday we're going to evaluate where the depth chart is at that point — who's getting better, who's falling down. Each player is going to be evaluated individually, it's more about them than the team as a whole. Hopefully at the end of the spring we'll be a better team naturally through having practiced and getting better fundamentally."
Up next: Practice 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the campus practice fields
