MOBILE, Ala. – In the fall the University of South Alabama football program made history with the school's first-ever bowl appearance in just its sixth season of competition. A pair of seniors from the squad will record another milestone moment for the Jaguars later this month.
Brandon Bridge and Wes Saxton are set to become the first two former Jags to ever take part in the National Football League Scouting Combine, which will be conducted in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium from Feb. 17-23. The former is one of 15 quarterbacks selected to participate in the event, and the latter is among 20 tight ends.
Participants are determined annually by a selection committee, with the directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services — which combined represent twenty-five NFL teams — joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee.
The event is closed to the general public, but the NFL Network will have live coverage every day including press conferences from 1-3 p.m. (CST) Feb. 18-19. On Friday, Feb. 20, the network will feature tight ends and offensive linemen testing with air times beginning at 8 a.m., and 3 and 7 p.m., and the next day — at the same times — it will highlight combine performances of quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.
Saxton is part of the first group to arrive and will be in Indianapolis from Feb. 17-20 taking part in testing drills his final two days, while Bridge's four-day experience will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 18. In addition to workouts, combine activities include interviews with NFL teams, medical examinations, media interview sessions and a National Football League Players Association meeting.
The duo each played in a postseason all-star game last month, with Bridge taking part in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and Saxton competing at the East-West Shrine Game.
