Post Game Quotes

MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomore center Chyna Ellis recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four blocks, while redshirt freshman Genesis Perrymond also chipped in with 17 points to lead the University of South Alabama women's basketball team to a 69-48 exhibition win Friday night over Montevallo at the Mitchell Center.

Of Ellis' 12 rebounds, seven came on the offensive glass.  Perrymond was 6-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from beyond the three-point line and also dished out four assists and recorded four steals in the win.  Colby Davis also ended the night in double figures with 10 points.

Third-year head coach Terry Fowler was glad his club had this opportunity to get out on the court and looks for them to build off this performance as they head into their season opener.

"It was good to get out and play against another opponent, put the uniforms on and be under the lights in front of a crowd," Fowler said.  "I thought early on our young players were kind of jittery, but they settled down in the second quarter and we held them to seven points.  I wasn't happy with our turnovers, and I thought we left some easy baskets on the floor.  We just have to improve from this game to our next game.

"I told the team after the game that 'We are going to be better when we play Spring Hill than we were tonight.'  It was good to see Genesis Perrymond in her first official game have the game that she had, and Chyna Ellis had great production as well.  We played the entire first half without Marquita Daniels, and then she came in and gave us a great spark and a lot of energy; I think we fed off of that and were able to play decent from there."

All 10 players that saw time on the court for South Alabama scored at least one basket.

The meeting versus the Falcons was the first between the two clubs since the 1985-86 season.

USA will next open up the 2015-16 regular season when the Jaguars welcome cross-town rival Spring Hill to the Mitchell Center on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.  Live stats and web streaming for the contest can be accessed at www.USAJaguars.com.  Fans can also keep up with in-match updates by following action on the program's twitter account @SouthALWBB.

As a team, the Jaguars forced 26 turnovers, leading to 25 points.

Montevallo was led offensively by Ashley Dunstan's game-high 21 points.  Dunstan was 6-of-8 from the field and did most of her damage from the outside where she connected on five three-pointers.

The Falcons jumped out to a 10-2 advantage in the opening minutes of the contest.  Dunstan gave the Falcons the eight-point advantage after she drained back-to-back three-pointers with less than six minutes remaining in the first period of play.

On South Alabama's next possession, Ellis knocked down a baseline jumper from the left side to ignite a 10-0 run for the Jags over the next two-and-a-half minutes.  Perrymond drained a trey on USA's next possession, which was followed by another basket from Ellis less than a minute later.  Davis then made it four-straight scoring possessions for the Jaguars when the junior guard knocked down a three of her own from the left wing with two minutes, 44 seconds to go in the first period.

The Falcons regained control 11 seconds later as Katherine Goldsby recorded her second basket of the night.  Goldsby then deflected a Jaguar pass and raced down the court for a layup with one minute, 34 seconds remaining.  Goldsby was unable to complete the three-point play on the possession, but Montevallo's Dunstan connected on her third trey of the half with just over a minute to play to put the visitors up 18-12.  The Falcons held a 20-14 advantage after the first period of action.

After allowing the opposition to shoot 50 percent during the first 10 minutes of action, the Jaguar defense stiffened at the start of the second period of play, holding Montevallo to just one made basket over the first eight-and-a-half minutes.  South Alabama also forced the Falcons into eight turnovers during that stretch.

USA scored the first five points of the second period and trimmed the deficit to 20-19 after Ellis went one of two at the foul line with seven minutes, 35 seconds to go.  Dunstan drained another three-pointer, but that would be the only field goal for the Falcons over the next four-and-a-half minutes.

South Alabama took advantage of the offensive struggles by Montevallo and ratted off an 11-0 run over a four-minute stretch to take a 32-23 lead with less than two minutes remaining before the half after scoring on six-straight possessions.  Five different players scored during the Jaguar run.  Ellis ignited the scoring as the sophomore drained a three-pointer from the right corner.  Perrymond then found Juliann Miller for a fast-break layup on South Alabama to give the Jags the lead.  India Hall later capped off the scoring and gave USA the nine-point advantage with a putback at the 1:45 mark.

The Jags kept control for the remainder of the half and headed into the locker room with a 34-27 lead.

Ellis led USA offensively during the first 20 minutes of action with 10 points.  The sophomore post player also had four of the Jaguars' five first-half blocks.  As a team, South Alabama was 13-of-28 from the floor for 46.4 percent.

Dunstan led Montevallo with 12 points, all of which coming from behind the three-point line.  The Falcons were 5-of-7 from long range in the half.

Montevallo scored the first five points of the third period and pulled within two (34-32) and a RayVon Christian bucket in the paint with eight-and-a-half minute to go in the period.

On South Alabama's next possession, Taylor Jenkins drove the lane and converted in traffic.  Marquita Daniels, who missed the first half due to a suspension of team rules, entered the game at the eight-minute mark and immediately made an impact as she recorded a pair of steals over the next minute-and-a-half leading to a pair of fast break layups.

Erin Autio knocked down South Alabama's fourth three-pointer of the contest with just over five to play, giving the Jaguars their first double-digit lead of the contest.

Katija Tarailo knocked down a turnaround jumper in the late with just over two minutes to go in the third, but on the Jaguars next trip down the floor, South Alabama was able to work the ball around the perimeter, eventually leading to a Perrymond three-pointer from the top of the key.

Davis later hit a runner in the lane just before the horn to end the third quarter, giving USA an 11-point advantage (51-40).

The Falcons again got off to a quick start in the fourth period, scoring the first five points.  Goldsby knocked down a jumper and Dunstan then connected from long range for the fifth time in the contest, narrowing the Jaguar lead to 51-45 with under nine to play.

South Alabama put the game away as the Jaguars outscored the Falcons 13-2 over the next seven-plus minutes.  The lone Montevallo field goal during that stretch came on a bucket by Dunstan at the 5:01 mark.

Ellis ignited the late Jag run as her layup at the 8:18 mark started a run of eight unanswered points.   During that stretch, South Alabama was led by the trio of Ellis, Davis and Perrymond who recorded 12 of USA's 13 points during the run.  Perrymond's fourth three of the evening with just over a minute remaining put the Jags up 65-47.
