ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – Whether it was Matt Sheehan matching the best finish of his career or a 73 from senior Tyler Klava and redshirt freshman Jason Mendel, the University of South Alabama men's golf team required a significant contribution from every member of its lineup Sunday to make a move up the leaderboard at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate hosted by Indiana.
The Jaguars posted scores of 300 and 305 in the final two rounds of the tournament, moving up three spots into eighth place with a team score of 910 over 54 holes at the par-71, 7,155-yard Wolf Run Golf Club.
Sheehan carded a 74 in the completion of the second round in the morning, going on to tie for 24th individually with a 228 total to lead the team in an event for the first time in his career.
Klava's 73 came over the middle 18 holes as well, while Michael Garretson supplied a second-round 74 as the 300 team total was the Jags' lowest of the tournament. Â In the final round, Mendel led USA with a 73 and Daniel Jansen chipped in with a 74 for the two best scores for the team on the day.
The trio of Garretson, Klava and Jansen tied for 34th place in the individual standings, with each recording a 231 54-hole total, with Mendel tying for 43rd one shot behind the group.
"It was a great experience at a championship venue," Jaguar head coach Ben Hannan observed. Â "With the wind, the conditions were as hard as we've played in in some time so any error was magnified. Â We got off to a slow start but battled and continued to get more production and better scores even in the tougher conditions, which helped us get back into the middle of the pack."
Illinois' Brian Campbell posted three straight sub-par rounds with scores of 70, 69 and 70 to earn medalist honors after carding a two-day 4-under-par 209 total, finishing three strokes in front of teammate Charlie Danielson — they were the only two in the field of 85 to break par at the end of the tournament.
The Fighting Illini had a score of 287 in each of the last two rounds, winning the team title by 30 shots over Florida with a 7-over-par 859 group total; with four individuals in the top eight overall, UI was the only school to shoot below 300 over the final 18 holes. Â Houston (899) and Chattanooga (905) finished third and fourth, respectively, with Penn State and William & Mary a stroke in back of the Mocs to round out the top five.
"If we are fortunate enough to make it to the [NCAA] postseason again this is the type of golf course that we'll see," stated Hannan. Â "For us, it's a game of minimizing mistakes and taking advantage of opportunities. Â We have to continue as a group to make better choices and execute when we have the chance."
USA will be off until the first weekend of next month, returning to action at Louisiana State's David Toms Intercollegiate on Saturday, Oct. 4.
