Offensive coordinator Robert Matthews-On what he is looking for from the offense in Saturday's scrimmage: "I would like to see us play with good tempo, execute well and be good on our procedures. I want us to be assignment-sound, but we're going into the second scrimmage and those things should be pretty clean. It's really about the attention to detail that our guys are willing to give, and the mental-readiness and carrying it over to the field."
-On creating depth at quarterback: "We are continuing to evaluate those guys every day. Both Matt (Floyd) and Hunter (Vaughn) have improved since they have been here. They have picked the offense up extremely quick. They're working hard every day, and we feel better about those guys after each practice."
Defensive Player of the DayJeremy Reaves, Fr., DB, Pensacola, Fla.
-
Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Reaves: "Jeremy is athletic. He is a big, fast and intelligent player, and he's growing every day. I'm anxious to watch him play when he finally figures it out. I don't want to toss him out there too fast; I just want to see him to continue to improve each day. He is going to be a tremendous talent."
Team period highlightUSA ran two team periods during Friday's workout. The offense lined up against the defense for nearly 15 minutes of work on two-minute drill. Following 7-on-7 skeleton pass drills, the Jags worked on third-down situations before closing practice with special teams work on punt team.
Head coach Joey Jones-On the team's progression in camp: "First of all I appreciate what our guys have done in paying the price to be out here in the heat. They are working their tails off to become better, and I want to thank them for that. And I want to thank our coaching staff for what they have done. They've really worked hard to get this program going."
-On Saturday's scrimmage: "We want to sharpen things up and create a game-like atmosphere. I want to see guys go out there and execute. We need to be organized on the sideline, eliminate penalties and turnovers, be sharp about substitutions and just listen. We have been working a lot on fundamentals and all aspects of the game, and now we have to put it together on the field on Saturday."
Miscellaneous Notes-Saturday's scrimmage will be the Jaguars' second in as many weeks. USA held its first scrimmage of camp last Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile.
Up next: South Alabama will hold its second scrimmage of camp Saturday at 9 a.m. at Fairhope Municipal Stadium in Fairhope, Ala.
