Date: 8/13
Time: 7:15-9:40 a.m.
Place: Campus practice fields
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: Kendall Houston, Sr., RB, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Robert Matthews on Houston: "Kendall had some solid runs for us today, he hit the holes really good. At the end of practice we ran a four-minute situation; we gave it to him to kill the clock and he got us first downs. It was really good to see him end the 'game' that way, that's what you want to do."
Defensive Player of the Day: Terrell Brigham, Sr., S, Waynesboro, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Brigham: ""He is the quarterback of the defense. He is a student of the game, and comes to work every day with no complaints. He works through the hurts and knocks of camp, and is consistently encouraging and coaching other young players. He has improved vastly in his knowledge of the game. He understands formations, concepts in the passing game and defending against the run. Just his overall knowledge is very good."
Play of the Day: In the final team period of the day, with the offense facing third-and-five from its own 35-yard line and needing to convert to run out the clock, Brandon Bridge completed a pass to Wes Saxton for a gain of 13 yards.
Team period highlights: The first 15 minutes of team periods featured the offense running first- and second-down plays to move the ball, and was followed by another 15 minutes with the unit attempting to convert on third downs. The final segment saw the offense run a four-minute drill starting from its own 30-yard line trying to close out a victory.
Miscellaneous Notes-The session ended with both Aleem Sunanon and Grant McLaurin attempting four field goals, with each converting three times including making a long kick from 42 yards out.
-Kickoff returns were the highlight of the specials teams period to start the workout, with punt coverage featured in the final period of the morning.
-Prior to the start of team periods, the Jags spent nearly 20 minutes working on the passing game in 7-on-7 skeleton drills, with routes run in the open field and the red zone.
-The Jaguars will take part in their second — and final — two-a-day practice of the preseason on Thursday with a pair of workouts on campus.
Head coach Joey Jones-On if he was happy with Thursday's practice: "What I am happy about now is that we seem to be in great condition, they're not wearing down at the end of practice. They're getting a little bit tired, but after that first day — when a few guys needed IVs after cramping — it's been really good. They've done a good job in the offseason and are playing through the practice; that's going to do nothing but help us in games this year."
-On what has stood out to him so far: "We've got a bunch of seniors who can play, guys who understand what it takes to win; I've seen a lot of leadership out there. And guys are not complaining — it's hot out here, we just went two-and-a-half hours in the hot sun and there wasn't one guy complaining or whining."
Offensive coordinator Robert Matthews-On the 'play of the day': "That was a really good throw and catch, that was the most critical play of the day. We worked some third downs today — we had a really good session — but that was an unscripted play, it was a game-like scenario and we were able to convert. I was really happy to see that."
