MOBILE, Ala. – Seven different University of South Alabama soccer players scored a goal as the Jaguars won their eighth-straight match 7-2 over Louisiana-Monroe Friday night at The Cage.
The Jags improve to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Warhawks drop to 7-5-1 and 1-2.
USA's seven goals are the second-most ever scored against a Sun Belt opponent (9 vs. UALR, 2012) and most against ULM in the series history between the two schools.
South Alabama's win streak ties the second longest in school history.
"I thought we played well," Jaguar head coach
Graham Winkworth said. "I thought we moved the ball well, particularly in the first half; I thought our ball movement was excellent. During the second half, ULM came out strong but once we scored a couple goals, it became easier for us. I thought our first-half performance was strong—we just had one error, giving the ball up and they scored, but outside of that, I thought we were very good in the first half."
South Alabama's three goals in the first half came in a span of less than five minutes, and the Jags scored five unanswered after falling behind 1-0 midway through the first half. USA outshot Louisiana-Monroe 36-8, including 18-2 before halftime.
"Who are you going to mark on our team right now?" Winkworth wondered. "It's exciting for a coach when you don't know where the goals are going to come from, and from different positions as well, which is key for me."
The Warhawks grabbed the lead on their first shot of the contest from Karlea Fehr in the 27th minute, after allowing 10 unanswered attempts to start the match.
Freshman
Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) set up the next two goals to put the Jags in front. Sophomore
Monique Autmon (Ocean Springs, Miss.) knotted the score at 1-1 at 35:30, and 82 seconds later, Hannah set up freshman
Sophie Haywood (Hull, England) for Haywood's seventh of the season. Freshman
Rio Hardy (Workington, England) ended the scoring burst at 39:53 after gaining control of a ULM goal kick and taking it the rest of the way.
"The girls were being patient," Winkworth said. "We were in control of the game in the first half. We went a goal down, but I really wasn't concerned because we were creating a lot of chances. As long as we're creating chances, I'm not too nervous. We continued to do that, and I was pleased."
Louisiana-Monroe came out firing to start the second half with the first five shots of the period, including four on net, but South Alabama regrouped and outshot ULM 18-1 the rest of the way. Goals by freshman
Steffi Hardy (Workington, England) and junior
Nini Rabsatt-Smith (Montgomery, Ala.) preceded ULM's second goal, and freshmen
Danielle Henley (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and
Chelsea Followwell (Sachse, Texas) finished off the scoring.
"We changed a few things and I think it took us a few minutes to settle down," Winkworth said. "We were still strong defensively; Sarah (Hay) made a couple of big saves, but once she did that, I thought the rest of the half, we were solid defensively and continued what we've done most of the season. I'm disappointed to have conceded a couple of goals, but at the same time, when we've created that many chances and scored that many goals, you can't really complain."
Sophomore
Sarah Hay (Waxahachie, Texas) made five stops in net for South Alabama.
The Jaguars return to action Sunday against Louisiana-Lafayette at 1 p.m. at The Cage.
