NEW YORK – The University of South Alabama's Wes Saxton remains in consideration for the honor presented to the top tight end in collegiate football, as he was part of the John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List released on Monday.
The list — announced by the John Mackey Award Selection Committee — includes 33 individuals, although the Jaguar senior is one of just two representatives from the Sun Belt Conference. Semifinalists for the honor will be released on Nov. 17, with the finalists selected one week later.
The John Mackey Award winner will be announced on Dec. 10, with the recipient presented the award the following day at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show which will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Through the Jags' first five games, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Hueytown, Ala., native stands third on the team with 11 catches. Saxton posted a season-best six receptions against Mississippi State — currently the top-ranked team in the national polls — and also caught three balls to help USA to its first league victory at Idaho two weeks later.
Saxton enters Saturday's 6:30 p.m. Homecoming contest against Georgia State ranked fourth in program history with 73 receptions and fifth with 1,047 receiving yards; both are the highest totals ever for a Jaguar tight end.
