MOBILE, Ala. – Thirteen assists were handed out in University of South Alabama women's soccer's clinical defeat of Southern on Tuesday night, as the host Jaguars returned home in style, cruising to an 8-0 victory at The Cage.
Â
Alyssa Mayer and Tina Schaar each recorded a brace apiece, and Stacie Bevens dished out three assists, a mark that tied her for fourth-most in USA single-game history, and South Alabama sealed its third shutout in seven matches behind four Lauren Arnold saves.
Â
"It's great to get another shutout; it's great to get another victory, but I'm most pleased with the fact that we didn't take our foot off the pedal," said USA head coach Graham Winkworth.
Â
"We kept on moving the ball around; we got it wide," he continued. "A lot of our goals have a lot of assists, because the goals were attractive ones; we moved the ball around well, and we put crosses in. I was not only impressed with the amount of shots we had, but with how many we put on target tonight."
Â
USA (5-1-1) outshot SU (0-4-1), 35-5, on the night, by far South Alabama's most of the year. USA placed 21 of its shots on frame for a 60-percent on-target ratio, while also dominating in corner kicks, 6-2. Arnold played the full 90 on Tuesday in her first appearance of the season.
Â
In the first installment of the Annual Jaguar Cup – both squads in Tuesday night's matchup are represented by such mascots – USA wasted no time in dictating the run of play. Two shots and a corner preceded USA's opening score in the 7th minute, which came off the foot of center defender Shelby Owen, scoring her second collegiate goal from a Clarissa Hernandez cross initiated by Alli Cochran's measured ball to the endline.
Â
Sophomore Jordan Duncan notched her second in as many matches only 11 minutes later, connecting on a one-two with Shawn Meach, whose header started the sequence. Duncan received Meach's return pass just in front of goal and calmly doubled the host advantage.
Â
Freshman Maha Maarouf buried her third on the season with a nifty half-volley after Alyssa Mayer found Bevens streaking down the right side to extend the lead to 3-0 shortly before the half was called.
Â
South Alabama held a 13-1 advantage in shots at the interval.
Â
Mayer was dropped just short of the SU penalty box seven minutes into the second period, and Tina Schaar buried the ensuing free kick from 20 yards out, crushing a shot that deflected off the Southern wall and into the top corner, too far out of reach for visiting keeper Kerrin Hall. Mayer was credited with an assist on the play.
Â
Mayer then twice found the back of the net, herself, in the space of two minutes, finishing Hall's spill of Maarouf's initial shot, before depositing Bevens's endline cross from freshman Shelby Gilliland, making it 6-0.
Â
Another two minutes passed and Schaar completed her bookend double by slotting home a messy scrum in the goalmouth after Kristyn Thacker's corner found the head of a leaping Lauren Allison, who nodded the ball off the crossbar and into the mix.
Â
Meach capped USA scoring in the 72nd, slamming home another dangerous Allison ball.
Â
South Alabama will now look to refocus for a Friday night affair versus Murray State, which defeated the Jaguars in 2012 with only seconds to spare in overtime. On Sunday, Alabama A&M will visit The Cage in an afternoon faceoff.
