PERRY, ALLISON DOUBLE IN JAGUAR SOCCER ROUT OF JACKSON STATE

USA's Tatum Perry scored her eighth and ninth career goals to help lead the Jaguars to a 5-0 win over Jackson State.
Box Score

TROY, Ala. – University of South Alabama women's soccer's Tatum Perry and Lauren Allison scored two goals apiece, and Maha Maarouf capped an important Jaguar start to the Trojan Classic, where USA dismantled Jackson State, 5-0, on Friday.

South Alabama (2-0-1) avenged a 2010 loss to the Tigers in Mississippi, a game in which six Jaguars that touched the field on Friday made their first collegiate appearances.

Now unbeaten in its first three matches, USA is off to its best start since the 1997 season when the club went 18-3-1 only a year after managing a 2-17 record, the NCAA's biggest turnaround. The Jaguars will next face Louisiana Tech on Sunday at noon.

Allison now has four goals in two appearances after also doubling in USA's season opener against Mississippi State. The freshman has put half her total shots in the back of the net and leads the team in points with eight. Perry now follows with five points after delivering an assist versus the Bulldogs, and she owns a perfect shooting percentage. Maarouf's tally was the first of her collegiate career.

In the absence of head coach Graham Winkworth, due to a suspension accrued by being dealt a red card in USA's match last Sunday at Nicholls State, USA was piloted by assistant coach Keyton Wheelock.

"Coach (Winkworth) implemented a gameplan for today's match this week in practice, and I believe the team performed to perfection," Wheelock said. "I believe it was the right plan, and the team was united. He knew we were ready when we stepped on the bus, and, today, the kids fought for us and one another."

After going into the break one up by way of Perry's first in the 15th minute, USA ignited the scoreline in the second period, scoring four more in a half-hour span. Four minutes after the interval, Perry attacked the opposing byline and slid her second past JSU keeper Kylie Christian to make it 2-0 USA.

Allison then struck twice in the space of twenty minutes, finishing a rebounded block shot and then beating Christian one-on-one to double the Jaguar advantage. Maarouf, a Baker High School graduate, then capped the scoreline at 5-0 with fewer than 10 minutes remaining.

"We wanted to rotate the squad today, because it was hot, and we have to prepare ourselves for Sunday's game," Wheelock added. "Our substitutes contributed. We now have five goal-scorers through our first three games. We attacked and supported as a team today – Maha, (Shawn) Meach, Rizzo (Clarissa Hernandez), and Nikki (Shirtcliffe), who, I believe played one of the best games I've seen her play, today – and we're proud of their fight."

Live stats for Sunday's match can be found on the soccer schedule page. Results from the event will be posted to the Jaguar athletics webpage immediately following.
