MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama received notification from the NCAA Friday that the organization has approved a waiver filed by the school on behalf of Danny Woodson, making the wide receiver eligible to compete for the Jaguar football team immediately.
Woodson, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Mobile, was at Alabama the last two seasons — appearing in six contests for last year's national champions — before enrolling in classes at USA over the summer.  He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
"When I got the phone call from [USA Assistant Athletic Director] Daniel McCarthy, he said he was going to make my day; I told him if it's the news I hope it is, it's going to make my year," said USA head coach Joey Jones. Â "We got really good news about Danny. Â He's a great football player and a great young man, we're tickled to death that he is going to be with us this fall. Â Danny can make a big difference in our offensive production."
A graduate of LeFlore High, Woodson was considered a four-star recruit according to ESPN.com, while three national recruiting organizations had him among the top 30 receivers in the country. Â He caught 78 passes for 1,360 yards his senior season en route to earning first-team all-state honors from the Alabama Sports Writers Association, while he recorded 25 touchdowns as a junior to help the Rattlers advance to the quarterfinals of the state 5A playoffs.
Woodson has been eligible to practice with the team throughout fall camp. Â He and the Jags will take part in their second preseason scrimmage Saturday at 9 a.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
