ROCKHILL, S.C. – Winthrop took the doubles point and three singles matches to defeat the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team 4-0 Saturday at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars dropped to 13-7 on the year, while the Eagles improved to 10-10.
“Today was a tough loss,” said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser. “It always leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you get out-toughed and out-competed. Today had nothing to do with being a young team, but plenty to do with a lack of pride. It was extremely disappointing because I believe we are at the crossroads of playing some good tennis, but performances like today are not acceptable and more importantly they stunt growth.”
Winthrop won the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 victories.
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia topped sophomore
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and freshman
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) at the No. 1 spot.
Alice Garcia and
Giovanna Portioli defeated sophomores
Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) and
Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) on the No. 2 court.
In singles action, the Eagles took the first three singles matches in straight sets to clinch with win over the Jaguars. Meszarosova fell 6-2, 6-1 to Garcia in the No. 1 flight and
Caitlin Cridland downed Ghermani 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.
Garcia rounded out the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Krachok on the No. 2 court.
“The good news is that we have a match in the morning to show what kind of character we have and decide if we want to be a good team or not,” said Keyser.
South Alabama is back in action tomorrow when they take on USC Upstate.
