WOMEN’S TENNIS PLACES TWO ON ALL-SUN BELT TEAMS

NEW ORLEANS – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team had two student-athletes named to the All-Sun Belt Conference team, the league announced at its annual awards banquet Wednesday night.

Sophomore Emily Newton was selected to the second team in singles while Newton and freshman Michaela Meszarosova were voted to the doubles second team. The All-SBC honors are the first for the program since 2009.

A Dothan, Ala. native, Newton is 12-6 this spring and 15-11 overall. Playing at the top three spots in the lineup, Newton has won eight of her last nine matches, all in straight sets, and hasn’t dropped more than four games in a set in her last five victories.

In doubles, Newton and Meszarosova have a 13-6 mark at No. 1 doubles and have won four of their last five matches. The pair posted a five-match win streak in March—losing five games total in their last three victories over that stretch—and went 3-1 against Sun Belt competition.

The Jaguars earned the No. 4 seed in the Sun Belt Championships and will play the winner of No. 12 Western Kentucky and No. 5 Louisiana at Lafayette Friday morning at 10 a.m.
