TULSA, Okla. - No. 28 Tulsa took the doubles point and won all six singles matches in straight sets to sweep the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Jaguars fell to 6-4 in their spring campaign while the Golden Hurricane improved to 9-4 overall.
“Regardless of the fact that we had some adversity, all credit goes to Tulsa,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “Once the match was moved indoors we realized there is a reason they have won 40 straight at home.”
UT’s combo of Renata Kuricova and Maria Sant’Anna got the first win of the day with an 8-3 victory over freshmen Sibela Gajer (Zagreb, Croatia) and Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) on the No. 3 court. Michelle Farley and Saana Saarteinen clinched the doubles point when they topped sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and freshman Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) 8-2 at No. 2.
The Golden Hurricane’s first singles point came on the No. 1 court when 59th-ranked Samantha Vickers defeated Meszarosova 6-1, 6-1. Sanchez fell 6-0, 6-1 to Saarteinen at No. 3.
Carol Benito secured the match for Tulsa with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gajer in the No. 6 flight.
“They are a good indoor team that played at a very high level today,” said Keyser.
Sant’Anna dropped Papke 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot and Martin lost 6-0, 6-1 to Kuricova at No. 5. Farley rounded out the day when she edged Newton 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 2 court.
“We are looking forward to getting home, getting healthy and getting back on the practice court for our upcoming homestand,” said Keyser.
South Alabama is back in action Thursday when they host Nicholls State.
