HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Kristen Golightly shot a 7-over par 79 to lead the University of South Alabama women’s golf team in the first round of the UALR Women’s Golf Classic at Diamante Country Club.
Golightly sat five shots back of the lead after the first round, which she closed tied for eighth.
The tournament’s second round was not completed due to darkness, and will be finished Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Officials will make a determination Tuesday morning whether or not a third round will be played. The Jaguars have five holes to finish once the second round continues.
The opening round of the tournament was delayed due to the greens being frozen, which in turn delayed the holes being cut in them.
“We had a high of around 50 degrees with the wind blowing 25 miles per hour,” head coach TJ Jackson said. “The conditions were pretty tough. But I have to give the girls a lot of credit for giving it their all today. The scores were high, and we just gutted it out in the first round. It’s hard to look at the scores on paper and realize how good a 79 is under these conditions, but anything under 80 is a good score.”
Ashleigh Ryals turned in a 9-over par 81 in round one, but is just 2-over par through 13 holes in the second round.
“Ashleigh is playing pretty good right now,” Jackson said. “She got into a little bit of a groove (in the second round). It was so difficult to get comfortable with the conditions as they were, but she got into a groove once she got comfortable. She’s playing pretty solid golf.”
Beebe shot 11-over par 83 in the first round, while Ingrid Hagen finished with a first-round 85. Taylor Appleyard turned in a first-round 86, as did Jordan Knight playing individually.
South Alabama finished with a first-round team score of 328, and closed round one tied for ninth.
“There are things we can do better – just mentally grind it out and I think we did a pretty good job of that today,” Jackson said. “But staying focused in those conditions is a difficult task. We should see the same conditions tomorrow, so we just need to stick to our game plan, focus the best we can and execute shots to our potential. I feel we did a good job of that today, we just let a few holes get away from us. Bogey won’t kill you on a day like today, but the triples and quadruple-bogeys will.”
