USA WOMEN’S TENNIS TRAVELS TO OKLAHOMA

MOBILE, Ala. – After snapping a three-match losing streak with a win over New Orleans, the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team heads northwest to Tulsa to face Oral Roberts and No. 28 Tulsa this weekend.

The Jaguars will take on Oral Roberts Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Case Tennis Complex and Tulsa Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

South Alabama enters the match with a 5-2 record overall after defeating New Orleans 5-2 Wednesday. Sophomore Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) secured the victory for the Jags with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Kristina Martic at the No. 2 spot.

“I thought our match against New Orleans was a lot more structured,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “We were better at playing the points and we had a little more patience between the points.  This is more of the style I hope we can buy into as we move forward.”

Sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) leads USA with an 11-7 record overall and a 6-2 mark in the spring. She has won five out of six matches in straight sets.

Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between South Alabama and Oral Roberts. The Golden Eagles currently hold a 1-5 record after falling 6-1 to Nicholls State Feb. 16. ORU’s only win came to Oklahoma Baptist when they defeated the Bison 5-2.

USA leads the all-time series with UT 2-1, but the two teams have not met since 2008. The Golden Hurricane has posted a 7-4 mark in their spring campaign. Samantha Vickers, ranked 55th in the nation, leads Tulsa with an 8-1 record at the No. 1 spot. She currently holds a four-match win streak and has won all eight matches in straight sets. Vickers has also defeated three opponents ranked in the top 90.

“We would obviously like to win both matches,” said Keyser. “We want to keep on defining our playing style and keep forging our team identity. It’s pretty simple. We have to be able to play the long points, play defense and just play with a chip on our shoulder.”
