MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama football defensive back Charles Harris recently sat down with USA Athletic Media Relations to discuss the season as well as life off the field.
How has the program evolved in your time at South Alabama?
"Nowadays it is a different experience. You have to pay more attention and capitalize on mistakes to make yourself and the team better."
Why did you choose to play at South Alabama coming out of junior college?
"It was a different experience, and I wanted to meet new people."
How did junior college prepare you for the Division I level?
"It helped me catch on to more of the plays, and helped me realize how it's supposed to be. It also helped me catch on and adjust to the speed of the game."
What do you like about (defensive coordinator) Coach (Kevin) Sherrer's defensive scheme?
"I love it. The reps at practice allow me to be in the plays mentally from the sideline during the game. And when I get out there I am prepared."
What do you like about playing for (head) Coach (Joey) Jones?
"He does a great job of handling the program. He's doing a wonderful job, and I will do whatever I can to help the team improve and succeed."
What type of leadership role have you assumed as a senior in the secondary?
"I feel like I have been a leader. I think they are catching on to what's going on and how things need to be done. But I like to set an example by my actions; I'm not much of a vocal guy."
How have you benefitted from the offseason conditioning program?
"I am faster and stronger than I was last year. I feel like I am capable of doing what others can't do. I feel like I can still accomplish great things."
Who are some people who have influenced you during your playing career?
"My biggest influences have been my daughter, my family and God."
Did you play any other positions in high school or junior college?
"In high school I played linebacker, safety, tight end and wide receiver. But I was recruited as a safety."
What do you want to do after your football career is over?
"I would like to help younger kids in social work. I just want to help them and make their lives better."
What do you like to do in your spare time?
"I like to play basketball and run when I have some spare time."
