BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team had three doubles teams and one singles player earn flight championships Sunday on the final day of the Samford Fall Invitational.

The Jaguars went unbeaten in doubles against UAB on the afternoon and added four singles wins against Middle Tennessee and Samford.

"It was a good weekend with plenty of good matches that will provide us with good reference points for this week's practice," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "We were 20-30 minutes short of having a really good day if we could've closed out some matches that we were well in control of, but this why we have a preseason in order to learn how to get better."

Sophomore Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and junior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) were the doubles champions at flight 1, freshman Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) and junior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) won at flight 3, and sophomore Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) and Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) claimed the title in flight 4.

Freshman Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) was named singles champion at flight 5.

Meszarosova and Newton finished the weekend unbeaten after their 8-6 win over Rachel Daniell and Caroline Faught. Sophomore Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) and Mitta also won 8-6, defeating Sarah Witkowski and Paula Castro at flight 2.

Valkova and Martin rounded out the weekend with an 8-2 victory against Catherine Ragon and Elaine Simon, while Papke and Matuskova recorded an 8-4 win vs. Amy Lowther and Giovanna Baccarini.

Mitta completed her perfect singles weekend with a straight-sets victory over Sarah Sediri, 6-2, 6-3. Valkova won 7-5, 6-4 against Tiffany William, and Sanchez dropped just three games in her match against Sarah Gail Niebur of Samford, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Silvia Martinkova (Trencin, Slovakia) tallied the final win of the day, defeating Alexa Torres 6-3, 6-2.

Middle Tennessee rallied from first-set losses to win at flights 2 and 4, and got straight-sets wins for their remaining three singles victories, including a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3.

The Jaguars return to action next weekend for the Lady Demon Invitational hosted by Northwestern State.
