AUBURN, Ala. – University of South Alabama junior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) lost just one game to claim the singles 'B' draw title Sunday at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships hosted by Auburn.

Martin won twice on the day to claim the championship, defeating teammate Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) in the semifinals. Sanchez and freshman Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) fell in the doubles 'B' draw final.

"Even though its only preseason I am very happy for 'Gator' to come away with a tournament win," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "She certainly deserves success after putting in the hours during the summer.

"This is one of the more successful preseasons we have had in a long time and it's nice to finish it with an ITA Regional title, a tournament where I cannot remember us having much success in the past."

Martin needed a third-set supertiebreaker to get past Sanchez in the semifinals and rallied for a 6-7, 6-2, (10-4) win. In the finals Martin nearly whitewashed Louisiana Tech's Taly Merker in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Sanchez and Mitta lost 8-4 to Lauren Caballero and Jessica Northcutt of Samford.

"As a team I think we still have a long way to go in order to play to our potential but I really like the way we are starting to blend as a team and the intent to do things the right way," Keyser said.

The Jaguars return to the courts in the spring.
