TROY, Ala. – Once the nation's leader in scoring offense, University of South Alabama women's soccer for the second time in a week was shutout and made victim by goals at the hour mark, after the Jaguars fell to Troy, 1-0, on the road Sunday afternoon..
Â
Necee Jennings converted in the 66th minute for the Trojans (7-9-0, 3-3-0 SBC), who pulled level in the league and up to fifth in the table, one spot behind USA (10-5-2, 3-2-1 SBC), which fell one slot with the loss after it landed in third following last Sunday's loss to Western Kentucky..
Â
South Alabama head coach Graham Winkworth doesn't fell the loss will force any added pressure on next week's conference roundup, but says his team will need to improve its finishing if it aspires for postseason success.
Â
"We created good chances today, the better in the match for a second time in a row, but our opponents made the most of theirs, and we haven't," he explained. "Troy are an underrated side and their player scored an excellent goal that we didn't defend well. But the fact is, we have to convert our opportunities."
Â
It was the freshmen that carried the load in attack for USA on Sunday, leading-scorer Lauren Allison, Maha Maarouf of Baker (Ala.) High School and Ocean Springs, Miss., product Moniuqe Autmon generating 11 of 18 Jaguar shots, five of the seven Troy's Madison Winter was forced to stop.
Â
Winter was made to work only once in the first period, but USA reeled off 11 shots after the break and forced three corner kicks. It was Troy, however, that led in the two categories after the match. Melissa Drish made five stops on the day.
Â
USA will now look to back-to-back home bouts to conclude the regular season. League runner-up Louisiana-Lafayette visits The Cage on Thursday at 7 p.m., and eight-place Louisiana-Monroe comes to Mobile the following Sunday.
Â
All home matches throughout the season are free to all attendees. The Cage is located on Old Shell Road, just east of Stanky Field. Â
