MOBILE, Ala. – After going down 5-0 to Mississippi State last Sunday, the University of South Alabama women’s soccer team was shut out again by a Southeastern Conference opponent on Friday, going down 9-0 to Alabama at The Cage.
 
The Jags (2-3-0) were outshot 36 to seven and Alabama (4-0-0) registered 11 corner kicks to only one by USA. ‘Bama’s Katie Bourgeois tallied four goals in the game and also assisted on one, while Molly Atherton added two for the Tide.
 
“It’s hard to take positives when you lose 9-0,” said head coach Mike Varga. “We’re in the business of trying to get results. We were lucky to be down 2-0 at halftime, and we came out well in the second half, but then gave up a goal and deflated.”
 
The Tide dominated the flow of play throughout the game and didn’t wait long to strike, with Bourgeois steering in a cross from Molly Atherton in the second minute. Fifteen minutes later, it was Atherton who found the net when she controlled a cross from Ashley Willis with one touch and scored to put ‘Bama up 2-0 at the break.
 
Bourgeois would go on to score three more in the second half, effectively reducing the game to a Tide target practice. USA’s Morgan Motes recorded two shots, both on goal, to pace the Jags, and keeper Lauren Arnold recorded six saves.  
 
“We really need to learn lessons from this,” added Varga. “But we’re going to move on. Fortunately, this is only one game. We’re going to get better and get ready to battle (Alabama State) on Tuesday.
 
Kickoff between South Alabama and Alabama State is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday at The Cage. The Jags are 3-0 all-time versus ASU. All home soccer matches throughout the season will be free to all attendees. The Cage is located on Old Shell Road just east of Stanky Field.
