NORMAN, Okla. – University of South Alabama men’s golfer McLain Leberte was honored for his work off the course Wednesday when he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
It’s the fourth time in as many seasons that a Jaguar has been recognized by the organization, as he joins former teammates Marc-Etienne Bussieres (2009-10), Christian Blanchet (2011) and Chris Piumelli (2011) in earning the award.
A total of 146 student-athletes across the country were honored. An individual must be a junior or senior academically, have competed in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participated in 70 percent of his team’s competitive rounds or competed in the NCAA Championships to be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status. Division I recipients must maintain a stroke average below 76.0 as well as carry a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average or better, and they must be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
As a junior last year, Leberte competed in 24 rounds over nine tournaments, recording a 75.75 scoring average. His low 18-hole score of 72 and 222 54-hole total were both posted at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, while in the Jags’ next event he tied for 25th place at the Inverness Intercollegiate. To end the campaign, Leberte — a native of Huntsville, Ala. — collected a top-20 finish at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
