JAGUAR SOFTBALL TAKES ON FIU IN SBC WEEKEND SERIES



MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team will look to continue its four-game win streak this weekend when it hosts Sun Belt Conference competitor Florida International in a weekend series Saturday and Sunday at Jaguar Field.

Saturday’s doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. while first pitch in Sunday’s series finale is set for 11 a.m. Live stats and web streaming for all three games will be available at www.usajaguars.com.

The Jaguars hold at 31-14 overall record and a 13-6 mark in the SBC after taking games two and three of the series at North Texas on April 21-22 and sweeping Mercer in a midweek doubleheader on April 25. USA leads the league in team pitching with a 1.97 ERA and team fielding with a .977 fielding percentage, and is second in the SBC in team batting with a .283 average.

South Alabama sophomore Hannah Campbell (17-9) leads the Sun Belt with a 2.03 ERA in 29 appearances. Campbell has struck out 165 batters in 165.2 innings of work while recording two saves and seven shutouts. Freshman Farish Beard (4-2) has recently made herself a presence in the circle for the Jags. Beard holds a 1.00 ERA and has recorded 51 Ks in 35 innings.

Junior Brittany Fowler leads all Jaguar bats with a .346 batting average. Fowler has tallied 47 hits including 11 doubles, a triple and five home runs. She also pushed a team-leading 33 runs across so far this season. Fellow junior Meghan Collins is right behind Fowler hitting .341 with a club-high .571 slugging percentage.

The all-time series between the Jaguars and the Panthers is tied at 8-8. Last season, USA took games one and two from FIU 2-0 and 7-5, respectively, before dropping game three 3-1 in Miami.

FIU is 24-23 overall and 12-7 in league play. The Panthers are third in the SBC standings behind Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama. This past weekend, FIU was swept by No. 3 Florida in all three games of the series losing 7-4, 9-0 and 7-1.

The Panthers split time in the circle between Mari Dawson (17-11) and Jen Gniadek (7-9). Dawson has a squad-low 2.81 ERA after 35 appearances. She has given up 133 hits and 68 earned runs in 169.1 innings. Gniadek has an earned run average of 2.89 in 25 appearances and has allowed 99 hits in 101.2 innings of work.

Offensively, FIU is hitting .266 overall with Ashley McClain leading the way at .370. McClain has put up 51 hits with 10 doubles, a triple and seven home runs. She also paces the team with a .609 slugging percentage and a .476 on-base percentage.
