AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ashleigh Ryals and Taylor Appleyard each shot a 2-over par 74 to lead the University of South Alabama women’s golf team in the final round of the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate Sunday at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Ryals (78-78-74) carded three birdies on the course’s back-nine holes, including consecutive birdies at the par-five 17th and par-four 18th to close the back nine at 1-over par. Appleyard (80-80-74) matched her career low with Sunday’s 74.
Kristen Golightly (77-73-77) earned her fifth top-20 finish of the season with a three-round total of 227 that placed her in a tie for 19th. Ingrid Hagen (73-77-79) finished tied for 25th with a three-round total of 229.
Ryals tied for 30th with a 230 three-round total, while Appleyard tied for 45th with a three-round total of 234. Ana Garcia (77-76-83) finished with a three-round 236.
South Alabama (305-304-304) finished sixth in the 14-team field, marking its seventh and fourth consecutive top-10 finish this season.
“As a team, this was the consistency we were looking for,” USA head coach TJ Jackson said. “Everybody contributed; all five players posted good rounds in the tournament and it added up to a good finish for us. The 73s and 74s are what we have to have to compete against good teams. We obviously want more of that, but we had enough of it to have a good finish in this tournament.
“This is a confidence booster. We played against a really strong field at this tournament, and proved that we can play with some good teams that are highly-ranked. We still have room for improvement, but we did some really good things here. One thing we did was limit our mistakes to bogeys. We just played really efficiently throughout the entire tournament, and it was a difficult golf course with a solid field. This should give us a little confidence going into the last two weeks at Samford and the Sun Belt Conference championship.”
Texas-San Antonio took the team title with a three-round team score of 880, while Purdue’s Paula Reto took medalist honors with a three-round score of 207.
USA will return to action April 9-10 at the Samford Women’s Intercollegiate at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala.
