MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s golf team will open its 2012 spring schedule at the Folino Invitational in Industry Hills, Calif., Sunday.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, will be held at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms. The Jaguars will compete against 11 other schools for the title: Cal Poly SLO, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, No. 70 Long Beach State, Montana, Sacramento State, Seattle and UC Riverside.
USA will compete on the par-71 Zaharias course, which will play between 6,088-6,552 yards. Teams will play from both the blue and white tees on the course. The tournament will kick off with round one Sunday at 8 a.m.

The South Alabama lineup will feature Kristen Golightly playing as the one after she won qualifying by 10 shots. Ashleigh Ryals will play in the second spot, followed by Ana Garcia, Taylor Appleyard and Anna Sellén-Runefjell.
“We met as a team and individually at the end of the fall and mostly talked about the fall season and preparing mentally for the spring,” USA head coach TJ Jackson said. “We let some opportunities slip in the fall that we need to make up in the spring. That’s been the mindset – to go ahead and clean the slate and get ready for the spring tournaments.
“I am looking for consistency throughout the lineup. Obviously low scores are what we want to see, along with the consistency with each round from round to round. We had four rounds of qualifying, and we played our best round in the final round. That tells me that we improved as went on through qualifying. The team is prepared; it’s just a matter of executing, playing like we know how to play and being comfortable with our environment. It will be a different feel just because of the long-distance travel. But in the end, we’re still playing a golf tournament and trying to get the ball in the hole as quickly as possible.”
In four fall tournaments, the Jags finished with a 308 team stroke average in 11 rounds and carded their season-low round (291) as well as their best finish (second place) at the ULM Fred Marx Invitational.
Garcia led the Jaguars with a 76.64 stroke average in the fall, and tied Ryals for the best individual finish (T-3rd) among the team.
