LAFAYETTE, La. – University of South Alabama sophomore midfielder Shawn Meach drew the Jaguar women’s soccer team level with Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday as USA overcame an uninspiring first half to claim a point in its last away match of the season.
USA (8-8-3, 3-4-2 SBC) went down in the 27
th minute when Louisiana’s Claire Ruehle connected from outside 18 yards to give the Ragin’ Cajuns a 1-0 advantage, with the home team registering eight shots to USA’s five in the first period.
Jaguar head coach Mike Varga said he hoped his halftime speech would ignite his team, as the squad has been in Louisiana since Wednesday, following a Thursday afternoon victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
“This was our fourth game on the road, and our play today was very lethargic in the first half,” Varga explained. “I got into them at the half, and I was proud of how they responded. We began playing with energy, and we turned around the attempts on goal.”
Fifteen minutes into the restart, the Jaguars equalized when Linsey Snavely measured a corner kick that found Meach’s head, and the Pensacola, Fla., native saw the ball into the ULL net, salvaging a point for the Jaguars, who are currently sixth in the conference and a lock for the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
Both teams produced chances in the following two overtime periods, but neither team could break through, ending the match 1-1.
“We needed to take points from this weekend, and we got four,” Varga said. “Our first goal of the season was to make the conference tournament, and we have done that. Now, we are looking forward to hosting Troy this weekend and honoring our seniors.”
USA is 4-3-1 all-time versus Troy. The Trojans are 8-9-2 on the year and 3-5-1 in conference play, standing a spot behind the Jaguars at seventh on the league table.
Kickoff for Friday’s match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. Results will be posted to the Jaguar athletics webpage immediately following the match. All home soccer matches throughout the season will be free to all attendees. The Cage is located on Old Shell Road just east of Stanky Field.
