USA HAS FIRST FOOTBALL ALL-AMERICAN AFTER MEANS HONORED

Jordan Means earned honorable mention All-America recognition on Thursday, the first time that's happened in program history.

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama football program achieved another historic milestone Thursday when Jordan Means became the first Jaguar to earn All-America recognition.

The Jags’ placekicker was an honorable mention NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-AA) All-America selection by the Beyond Sports College Network, it was announced by the organization Thursday.

A 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior from Hoover, Ala., Means led USA with 62 points in the fall — becoming the first placekicker to pace the Jaguars in scoring in their first three years of competition — after connecting on 13-of-15 field-goal attempts and 23-of-26 points after touchdown.  He had six contests with multiple field goals, accomplishing the feat for the first time in the Jags’ first-ever game against an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision opponent at North Carolina State.  His second field goal in that outing would begin a streak of seven straight makes, setting one school record, while his 48-yard effort in a double-overtime victory at Texas-San Antonio set another for longest field goal in program history.

Means’ 13 field goals also set a USA season standard, while the point total was the second-highest recorded in the Jaguars’ first three years.

Entering Saturday’s NCAA FCS championship game, Means is tied for 18th nationally with 1.30 field goals per outing and also among the top 70 in the country with 6.20 points per game.

The Jags posted a 6-4 mark in 2011 in the first of two years making the transition to the NCAA FBS level.
