USA SOCCER TO HOST 10TH ANNUAL PORT CITY CLASSIC

MOBILE, Ala.
– The University of South Alabama soccer team will host the 10th annual Port City Classic at The Cage this weekend, facing off against Presbyterian at 7 p.m. on Friday and Austin Peay on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Troy will take on the Lady Governors at 4 p.m. Friday, before doing battle with the Blue Hose at noon on Sunday.

“We have three quality teams coming in this weekend,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “The matches should be competitive and entertaining to watch. The weather should be great, so hopefully we’ll get our local soccer enthusiasts to come out and support the team.”

The Jags (5-1) currently hold a four-match win streak, including three consecutive shutouts. USA enters the tournament after a two-win weekend at the Trojan Classic in Troy, Ala. Sept. 2-3. South Alabama downed both Alcorn State and Nicholls State 3-0.

“Overall I was pleased with how we played last weekend, but there are still things that need improvement,” Varga said. “That’s what we will be working on this week in training. We still need to be able to put full matches together, not just portions of matches.”

Friday night’s match will mark the first-ever meeting of the Blue Hose and the Jaguars.

Presbyterian (0-4) is looking for its first win of the season. Tuesday night the Blue Hose dropped a 3-2 decision to Francis Marion in Clinton, S.C.

PC’s top performers include Gracie Boswell and Rebecca Miller who have each recorded one goal.

The all-time series with Austin Peay is tied at 1-1-1. Last season the Lady Govs edged the Jags 1-0 in the 2010 Trojan Classic.

Austin Peay is off to a 4-1 start this season, with their only loss coming at home to Sun Belt Conference foe Western Kentucky 3-1 on Sept. 2. APSU is coming off a 2-1 win over Belmont on Sept. 4 in Clarksville.

The Lady Govs are led by Tatiana Ariza who has tallied nine goals and five assists so far this season. Emily Perkins and Claire Pultz have each added five goals.
