USA SOCCER TIES FAU 1-1

USA vs. FAU box score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of South Alabama soccer team recorded their second draw of the season when their match against Sun Belt Conference competitor Florida Atlantic ended with a score of 1-1 after a double overtime Friday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

“We had a fast start when we scored an early goal,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “We had a lot of momentum and then there was a delay because their lights wouldn’t come on, so we had to wait twenty or thirty minutes for that. Then it turned into a grind-it-out game. They got a goal and we kept battling. We had a couple great chances and played very well in the second overtime, trying to get the winner, but we just couldn’t.”

USA (9-1-2, 2-0-1 SBC) remains unbeaten in its last 11 outings. FAU is now 4-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

The Jags took the early lead in the second minute of play when senior Brandi Smith (Red Oak, Texas) netted her career-high eighth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Clarissa Hernandez (Pensacola, Fla.).

FAU answered in the 51st minute when Meagan Borger found the head of Brittney Nash who bounced it off the right post and into the back of the net tying the match at 1-1.

Florida Atlantic narrowly outshot South Alabama 20-19.

Defensively, Jaguar goalkeeper sophomore Melissa Drish recorded eight saves on the night.
