USA vs. Nicholls State box score
TROY, Ala. – Three different University of South Alabama student-athletes found the back of the net in the Jaguars 3-0 win over Nicholls State Saturday at the Troy Soccer Complex, which gives the Jaguars their third consecutive shutout of 2011.
“It was a good team effort today,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “I still thought there were spurts where we needed to play better, but we played well collectively. We scored two goals in the first 14 minutes so we really came out pretty fast and set the tone for the match.
“I was proud of our team today.”
Senior forward Brandi Smith (Red Oak, Texas) and sophomore defender Tatum Perry (Huntsville, Ala.) controlled the first half with two goals, while senior forward Landi Wilson (Cincinnati, Ohio) added the third and final goal of the match 67 minutes into play.
Smith put the Jags (5-1) on the board early, netting her third game-winning goal of the season off a cross from sophomore Linsey Snavely (Hayes, Va.) in the seventh minute.
Perry extended the Jaguar lead to 2-0 at the 14-minute mark, recording her third goal of the year.
Wilson sealed the deal with an unassisted goal in the second half. The score brings Wilson’s season total to four goals.
Jaguar goalkeeper Melissa Drish (Conyers, Ga.) posted four saves to preserve the shutout, her third in a row.
South Alabama has outshot all of its opponents this season after recording a 15-8 advantage over Nicholls State (1-3-1) in the match.
USA returns to action on Friday, when the Jags play host to Presbyterian at 7 p.m. on the opening day of the Port City Classic at the Cage. Austin Peay and Troy will face off in the first match of the tournament at 4 p.m.
