MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama soccer team will travel to Troy, Ala. to take part in the Trojan Classic Friday and Sunday.
The Jaguars will play Alcorn State Friday at noon followed by their bout with Nicholls State Sunday at noon.
“Being so early in the season, I don't know a lot about either team we will be playing this weekend, so our focus is to continue to keep our standard of play at a high level and continue to improve,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “We have shown that we can play good soccer, but we haven't put together a complete match yet. We need to maintain our focus for a full 90 minutes.”
USA (4-1) is undefeated in its last four outings. The Jags are coming off a 2-0 shutout of Jacksonville State on Aug. 28 at The Cage.
South Alabama is led by senior forwards Landi Wilson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Brandi Smith (Red Oak, Texas). Wilson has netted three goals so far this season including one game-winning goal. Smith had recorded two goals and two assists.
Sophomore midfielder Clarissa Hernandez (Pensacola, Fla.) has also added two goals and two assists this year.
Friday’s match will mark USA's first-ever meeting with Alcorn State.
The Lady Braves (0-1) dropped their season opener 6-0 to Southeastern Louisiana on Aug. 19 in Hammond, La.
The Jags have never lost a match to Nicholls State. South Alabama leads the all-time series with the Colonels 4-0. USA blanked Nicholls State 7-0 in their last meeting in 2008.
The Colonels stand at 1-1-1 so far this season, and will take on Troy Friday before matching up with the Jaguars on Sunday.
Nicholls State’s top performer is Kristy Tatom. Tatom has scored two goals and added two assists off the bench for the Colonels.
