MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama football program released the addition of a fifth junior-college transfer to the 2012 roster Monday, this time on the offensive side of the ball.
Jaguar head coach Joey Jones announced that Wes Saxton, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound tight end from Itawamba (Miss.) C.C., has signed a National Letter-of-Intent with the school; he will enroll in classes in the spring and have three seasons of eligibility left.
Saxton is the first offensive player to be added to next fall’s roster during the junior-college signing period, as the rest of the class is comprised of defensive end Pat Moore and a trio of cornerbacks — Anthony Harris, Darrius Morrow and Charles Watson.
In his only season with the Indians, Saxton collected 10 receptions for 137 yards and a score to be named second-team Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) all-state. Originally from Hueytown, Ala., he played his final two seasons on the prep level at Jess Lanier High, where as a junior he helped the program to a 9-2 finish and a first-round victory in the state 6A playoffs.
The Jags are coming off a 6-4 performance in 2011, the program’s third winning season in as many years of competition. They will conclude a two-year transition to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-A) level in the fall, and will be eligible to compete for the Sun Belt Conference championship and a berth in a bowl game in 2013.
