MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama football program added to its junior-college recruiting class Thursday when head coach Joey Jones announced that Charles Watson has signed a National Letter-of-Intent with the school.
A 6-foot-1, 195-pound cornerback, he will enroll in school this spring and have two seasons of eligibility left. Watson’s addition brings the Jaguars’ junior-college class to four as he joins Anthony Harris and Darrius Morrow — both of whom also play cornerback — as well as defensive end Pat Moore.
Watson comes to the program from Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C., where he was part of a team that finished sixth in the final National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rankings after a 46-17 defeat of Blinn (Texas) J.C. in the Mississippi Bowl. The Tylertown, Miss., native was credited with 46 tackles in the fall, including six for loss, and he intercepted two passes while breaking up seven others. As a freshman, Watson posted 10 stops while helping the Bulldogs end the year ranked third in the nation; MGGCC went 20-4 during his career, winning the MACJC championship his first year.
Last year, USA posted its third consecutive winning record after going 6-4 in the first of a two-year transition to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-A) level; the Jags have an all-time mark of 23-4 (85.2%). In 2012, they will play contests at Mississippi State, North Carolina State and Hawaii and face an eight-game Sun Belt Conference schedule as well.
