USA vs. Troy box score
Troy, Ala. – The University of South Alabama soccer team defeated Sun Belt Conference foe Troy 2-1 Friday afternoon in the final match of the regular season at the Troy Soccer Complex.
With the win, USA advances to 12-4-3 overall and 5-3-2 in conference play while the Trojans fall to 9-10-1 on the season and 4-7 in the SBC.
“I was very proud of our team, especially in the second half,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “I was proud of our effort. We came out ready to play. We didn’t put shots in there as much as we needed to in the first half. We were a different team in the second half. Fortunately, we got a goal through it.”
The Jags started strong scoring within the first two minutes of the match. Freshman midfielder Shawn Meach (Pensacola, Fla.) was able to convert a corner kick by sophomore Linsey Snavely (Hayes, Va.) to put USA on the board.
In the 35th minute, Troy’s Maddie Tieken answered netting the game equalizer off a pass from Rochelle Bohuslavick.
South Alabama senior forward Landi Wilson (Cincinnati, Ohio) sealed the deal for the Jags 15 minutes into the second half scoring her second game-winning goal of the season.
USA outshot Troy 9-7 on the day.
Jaguar goalkeeper sophomore Melissa Drish (Conyers, Ga.) recorded three saves bringing her season total to 98.
The Jaguars have already established a post season seed in the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championship hosted by Middle Tennessee and will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for the tournament Nov. 2-5.
