USA vs. FIU box score
MIAMI – The University of South Alabama soccer team recorded its second loss of the season to Sun Belt Conference rival Florida International Sunday afternoon at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
“It was probably one of our weakest performances of the year,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “I was disappointed that we didn’t go out ready to play. We just have to put this one behind us and get ready for next weekend.”
The Jaguars fall to 7-2-2 and 2-1-1 in the SBC while the Panthers advance to 7-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The Panthers’ Ashleigh Shim picked up a brace in Florida International’s 2-0 shutout of USA.
Shim gave FIU the early lead when she scored the game-winning goal assisted by Kim Lopez in the 23rd minute of play.
Five minutes before the end of play Shim netted her second goal of the afternoon off a pass from Chelsea Leiva.
South Alabama senior Brandi Smith (Red Oak, Texas) put up three shots, including one shot on goal, but the Jaguars were outshot by FIU 19-5.
USA sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Drish recorded six saves on the day.
Next, the Jags continue their four-match road trip when they take on SBC foes Denver in Denver, Colo. on Oct. 7 and North Texas in Denton, Texas on Oct. 9.
