LADY JAGS, SULLIVAN CAPTURE FIRST PLACE AT AZALEA CITY CLASSIC

Dani Sullivan wins Azalea City Classic

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama hosted the Azalea City Cross Country Classic today as the Women’s team had the top three finishers in the women’s 5k . The Jaguars were led by Dani Sullivan who finished the 5k course with time of 18:31.30. Tori Lawson earned a second-place finish with a time of 18:57.86, and Jessie Mackie who captured third-place with a time of 18:58.57. The Jags also had two other runners finish in the top 16 with Brittany Westmorland coming in 10th with a time of 20:26.13 and Sasha Corcoran who finished 16th with a time of 20:58.50. 

The women’s team ended the meet in first place overall with a 32 total points. The team finished 17 points ahead of second place West Florida and 20 points ahead of third place Southeastern Louisiana.

“The girls ran really well today,” South Alabama cross country coach Tim Goldsack said. “It is always good to finish one,two,three. Dani Sullivan winning her first collegiate meet is great to see and having her beat Tori Lawson who is fifth in the conference is a big thing. And having Jessie Mackie running next to them is is impressive.”

The South Alabama men’s team had four runners finish in the top 10 on their way to a second-place finish in the men’s 5k race. The Jags were led by Scott Lasiter finished second with a time of 15:31.96, Matt Miller finished fourth with a time of 15:50.69, Saber Salah finished seventh with a time of 15:59.97 and Damien Lee finished ninth with a time of 16:02.32. Zac Brantley finshed with a time of 16:31.53 and came in 16th, and Mark Sullivan finished 17th with a time of 16:41.62. Rich Schmitz finished 28th with a time of 17:58.44.

The men finished in second place overall with 37 total points, only five points behind first place West Florida.

“On the guys side,”said Goldsack, “I think we could have run a little bit better. Scott Lasiter ran well today but we have some work to do. Luckily we have six weeks to change things ,and I think we have the time and the ability to do it. We just have to get our minds and our bodies right.”

South Alabama will compete again next Saturday at the Memphis Twilight in Memphis, Tenn.
