MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama’s women’s tennis team dropped its match to Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas 7-0 Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
North Texas quickly clinched the doubles point early with a win at the No. 2 spot and a default victory at No. 3. South Alabama’s Marie Boura and Jess Courtnell fell to Catalina Cruz and Barbora Vykydalova 8-4. With the doubles point decided, a tiebreaker was played on the No. 1 court. The Jaguars’ Katie Welch and Chané Hines downed Irina Paraschiv and Amy Joubet 8-7 (6-4).
In singles action, USA’s Courtnell fell to Paula Dinuta 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 position, clinching the match for the Mean Green. Hines followed on the No. 3 court dropping her match to Vykydalova 6-4, 6-2. At No. 1 singles Welch traded games with Madura Ranganathan in the first set before ultimately falling 7-5, 6-0.
The Jaguars’ Boura dropped her first set 7-5 to Paraschiv at the No. 2 singles flight, but battled back to claim the second set 6-4. In the third-set super-tiebreaker Boura was edged out by Paraschiv 10-8 to complete the Mean Green’s 7-0 win.
The Mean Green’s Cruz and Joubet picked up wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights by default.
South Alabama will square-off with the University of New Orleans Feb. 24 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
