OPENING TIP
Southern Miss earned an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament last year and lost in the first round to Louisiana Tech.

South Alabama last lost in Hattiesburg in 2002. USA has won the last two away from home.

Gary Flowers, who led USM with 15 points vs. South Florida on Nov. 12, had a double-double in the Golden Eagles’ 66-54 win in Mobile last year. He had 18 points and 11 rebounds and added four blocks.

The Jaguars have not won a road opener since 2001, a span of nine games. The last road-opening win was at Marquette in 2000.

USA lost all four games against Conference USA opponents last season, but won the previous five games against CUSA schools dating back to the 2005-06 year.

All 12 of Rico Sanders’s points came in a three-minute span in the second half. He hit four straight 3-pointers and scored 12 of the team’s 19 points in a 19-1 run.

Augustine Rubit’s double-double in his first career game included 15 rebounds, the most by a USA player since Brandon Davis’ 16 on Jan. 31, 2009. Davis was also the last Jaguar to record a double-double in a season opener in 2008. Rubit averaged 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in two exhibition games.

South Alabama’s 45.7 percent performance at the free throw line vs. Spring Hill was the program’s lowest with at least 20 attempts since Nov. 13, 2007.

Martino Brock accumulated four steals Friday, tying his career high, and scored 10 of his 16 points after halftime.

Spring Hill’s 25 turnovers are the most by a USA opponent since Louisiana at Monroe committed 26 on Dec. 20, 2005.
