MOBILE, Ala. –The University of South Alabama soccer team fell to Florida International 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action at The Cage.
“It was a disappointing loss today,” USA head coach Mike Varga said. “FIU is a good team and hopefully this match will show that we are a good team also. After our play this weekend, I feel that we can compete against any team in the conference.”
FIU (7-4-1, 4-0) forward Chelsea Leiva scored the match-winning goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Kristyn Thacker and Brandi Smith led the Jags with two shots a piece.
FIU outshot the Jags 22-8, while goalkeeper Melissa Drish recorded a season-high 16 saves.
USA (4-8-1, 2-2-0) returns to action Friday against Denver. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Cage.
