MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama Senior Associate Athletic Director Pam Young has announced her resignation in order to pursue other opportunities, Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann announced.
Young served the USA Department of Athletics in a variety of positions for 20 years, dating back to 1980 when she began as a graduate assistant in the department of physical education. After stints as the head women’s basketball coach at Spring Hill College, and as a physical education teacher and head coach for the girls’ basketball program at UMS-Preparatory School in Mobile, she returned to USA in 1991 as an athletic academic advisor and special programs coordinator.
She became the department’s first Senior Woman Administrator in 1995, and was elevated to associate athletic director in 2000 before taking on her most recent duties in October 2006.
A native of Brandon, Miss., and a member of the Brandon High School Hall of Fame (Class of 2005), Young earned a basketball scholarship while completing her bachelor’s degree in physical education at Belhaven College. She later received a master’s degree in education from USA in 1981.
“I have loved my years at South Alabama working with the department’s amazing coaches and staff, and assisting student-athletes in the pursuit of their goals,” Young said. “I will miss interacting with all my wonderful friends at the University and in the Sun Belt Conference, but I’m looking forward to an exciting opportunity in the private sector.”
“Pam’s faithful service to the department, University and collegiate athletics as a whole will always be remembered and appreciated,” stated Erdmann. “She has been an integral part of the growth of this department and left an indelible mark on its accomplishments.”
