MOBILE, Ala. –University of South Alabama head coach Mike Varga earned his 100th win at USA in a 4-3 extra time victory against Sun Belt Conference opponent Florida Atlantic Friday night at The Cage.
USA (4-7-1, 2-1) remains undefeated at home this season while FAU loses its first league match.
“I thought we played a good first 65 minutes,” USA head coach Mike Varga said. “We got comfortable with our lead and showed our youth tonight, but it was a good lesson learned. The teams in the Sun Belt are good and the game continues no matter what the score is. When we have a big lead we have to be able to keep the possession and maintain our composure.
“I couldn’t think of a better team to share my 100th victory or a more memorable game to achieve this honor.”
The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead when Kasey Crowe scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Brandi Smith in the 28th minute. Crowe later doubled the score in the 63rd minute on an assist from Linsey Snavely.
Jaguar freshman Kristyn Thacker tacked on a goal in the 70th minute to give the Jags a 3-0 lead.
FAU forward Allison Griffin turned around and scored the first goal of the night for FAU in the 75th minute.
Jesse Shug and Griffin then tacked on two goals, respectively, in the 79th and 87th minute to tie the game 3-3 to take the match into overtime.
USA’s Tina Schaar scored the golden goal in the 100th minute to give the Jags a 4-3 victory.
FAU outshot the Jags 18-17, while goalkeeper Melissa Drish had nine saves.
USA returns to action when they take on Florida International Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
