MOBILE, Ala. ? South Alabama forward Sam Stocker netted a game-winning shot on a penalty kick at the 80:33 mark of the second half to lift the Jaguars over Arkansas State 3-2 in their conference-opener Friday night at “The Cage.”
USA (3-6, 1-0) took an early 1-0 lead at the 2:33 mark of the first half when sophomore forward Liz Clark scored a goal off of assists from Tiara Smith and Rachel Hess.
ASU (3-5, 0-1) answered at the 23:36 mark of the first half when Bernadette Dierker scored to tie the match at 1-1 following a corner kick from the right side.
The Jags took a 2-1 lead at the 74:52 mark of the second half when Brandi Smith scored from the right wing on an assist from Kelly Tarrant.
The Red Wolves tied the game 2-2 at the 80:06 mark of the second half on a direct kick by Chelsea Hopkins.
Stocker’s game-winner secured the USA victory with 9:27 remaining in the match.
The Jags return to action at home on Sunday, Sept. 28, against UALR in conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at “The Cage.”
